Puerto Rico 's Energy Market
Puerto Rico 's electric market is in the hands of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, a public corporation founded in 1941 that operates as a state-owned monopoly. It has an installed capacity of 4,394 MW and provides electricity to 1.4 million customers.
Two private cogenerators provide approximately 950 MW of capacity to the system, which is distributed in the following way:
- PREPA Bunker oil #6: 50%
- PREPA Bunker oil #2: 22%
- EcoEléctrica: Natural Gas: 13%
- AES: Coal: 14%
- PREPA Hydro: 1%
