Improving the community access to higher education

Recognizing the need to improve all around educational opportunities in the area and that youth lack of incentives to go to college, EcoEléctrica committed itself to promoting higher education. In 1999, a year before beginning commercial operations; the company instituted its Scholarship Program for Peñuelas and Guayanilla high school seniors in order to foster education at the university level.

Since its inception, the program has allotted more than $320,000 for first year university students. Annually it chooses 40 students, to help them fund their first year college studies. Some of the first recipients have already completed engineering studies and have become active citizens in their communities. A total of 320 students have been awarded the scholarships during the past eight years, and 40 more candidates will be chosen in May of 2007.
